The government should serve the people, plain and simple. What we seem to have now is a group of billionaires concentrating power, claiming to be transparent yet showing nothing, ignoring due process and trying to silence the media.
The country needs people who want to protect the rights of individuals, uphold democratic norms and challenge overreach, whether its coming from a president or some billionaire appointee.
Politicians are civil servants, they shouldn't be sitting in congress for 30 years, let alon people pushing 50 years in some cases. I get it, they want to serve and some of them are doing good work, hell Bernie Sanders is out there right now bringing a great message to this country challenging the Oligarchy with AOC. Despite what great work he might be doing I believe in term limits.
Congress - I don't believe anyone should be able to run for another term after 20 years combined service between the House and Senate.
The Supreme Court - A lifetime appointment has people dying in office, 18 year terms will spread out appointments.
The President - It goes without saying we have the Twenty-Second Amendment and that needs to stay.
We need to remove the money out of politics as much as possible, Citizens United should be overturned, the "Super PACs" need to go, campaign contributions need to be limited, it is not "free speech" to buy elections. Between PAC's and lobbyists this country is being bought and paid for and stolen from the citizenry.
Those might be two major issues but there is so much more, from the current administration and the Save act, to gerrymandering creating pockets of deep blue or red districts taking away the weight of the individual vote. There needs to be a correction to give the power back to the people in this country, not just the ones with the money.
"The education here intended in not merely that of the children of the rich and noble, but of every rank and class of people, down to the lowest and the poorest. It is not too much to say that schools for the education of all should be placed at convenient distances, and maintained at the public expense."
-John Adams
250 years ago our founding fathers knew that education was important to our society, that hasn't changed. Now I am not saying everyone needs to go to college, maybe you want to get into a trade and master a skill, that's still education.
The Government has (at least a bit at this point) the Department of Education for a reason, people point to misinformation about where we rank and used to rank in education, I won't get into that. What I will say is that the mission of the Department of Education is important, they support state and local schools, promote educational equality for all students and provide grants and loans to higher education and to students. We don't need to cut that organization, we need to invest in it and into our population.
Public Schools need proper funding and properly paid teachers, I can't say for sure that there should be a set salary, states vary so much with cost of living, but what I can say is that every class needs a budget and proper funding, we have teachers spending their salary on supplies to educate our children, because they care.
There needs to be a bare minimum of free education, I believe we need to offer 2 years of post-secondary education, we have community colleges that deserve our funding allowing everyone in this country the opportunity to thrive, and they need to be expanded offering more education in the trades not just college courses and a pathway to a higher degree.
I spent years working in medical billing, I saw the costs people were charged for the simplest things, I saw the pennies that insurance companies paid while sending bills to patients for more than they would cover, the whole system is disgusting. The notes that elderly patients would send in full of fear and worry about their bills is heartbreaking, that shouldn't happen in a country like this.
I really do believe this country has a mental health epidemic, but I believe the root of it comes from the costs of prescription drugs and health insurance. The Affordable Care Act was a step in the right direction, but I know that it did also hurt some people, Universal single-payer healthcare will save lives, that $200 coming out of your paycheck to go to whatever mediocre insurance your job provides for you and your family can do better, and as a country we need it to do better.
Prescription drug prices are 278% higher than 33 other countries, people shouldn't be going broke to stay alive, no one should be having to decide if they want to eat or pay for prescriptions.
Mental Health, I remember growing up and the idea of seeing a therapist was frowned on, the first time I ever did I had a lot of pushback from a parent who thought it was just crap. So many of us neglect it and we need to make sure there isn't a stigma to it and we need to have more publicly available options for those who are struggling. As a veteran I have known more than a few people who aren't here today because they lost fights that they didn't need to.
In 1961 John F. Kennedy established USAID, yet another agency our current president is trying to dismantle.
Like JKF said "The people who are opposed to aid should realize that this is a very powerful source of strength for us. It permits us to exert influence for the maintenance of freedom. If we were not so heavily involved, our voice would not speak with such vigor."
Humanitarianism though goes beyond one agency, we need to reaffirm friendly relations, we need to stop funding endless wars, and apparently the unpopular opinion in Washington, we need to work for a permanent peace between Israelis and Palestinians. October 7th, 2023 was horrible, but so is what is happening in Gaza.
Birth control is healthcare, the morning-after pill is healthcare, abortion is healthcare.
I am a male, I don't have ovaries, sure I personally am against abortions, but I am also against telling a woman what they have to do with their bodies, I do not have that right.
Yes, I support some limits on how late they should be performed, I don't know what that is though, 15 weeks? 22 weeks? I honestly don't know, that should be between a doctor and patient. I would wonder about other potential options when it comes to fetal viability (around 24 weeks), but I am not a medical professional and my own morality shouldn't guide what someone else does with their body. I have known more than a few women in my life who have had abortions and more than anything they didn't need hate or anger or laws attacking them, they needed support.
I know I have been paying into this for the last 30 years of my life, and I know you have too. This isn't some ponzi scheme, this is a lifeline to so many people, we don't need to cut it, we need to expand it.
$176,100 per year, thats is the cap on earnings taxed by social security, that needs to go, you have CEO's making millions who by having just a little less fuel for their yacht can help correct this system, we could raise payments and keep up with the cost of living.
We all know someone who uses social security and we should want to protect those people.
This one is personal to me and I really am going to need to spend a lot of time thinking what to even write here. From the old timers at the VA to the Vet Bro's trying to get you to buy their T-shirts every one of them is part of a family that I believe deserves our thanks.
I have a lot of thoughts on this as someone who uses the VA primarily so I really need to take my time here, i'll get back to this one.
